Oprah Inspires Saudi Women

After Oprah’s talk show was broadcast via satellite to Saudi women many of them started to feel a special connection to her and the issues discussed on her show.
I think that this is a great outlet for all women, but especially for Saudi women because of they don’t have the opportunity to express issues they might be dealing with as freely as American women do. It is good for everyone to have someone to relate to and know that others might be dealing with the same issues.
Making this connection is especially important in a country where topics like race and sex are not allowed to be discussed. Women need to have more knowledge on these subjects and shouldn’t be looked down on for wanting to.
Oprah is a great medium for gaining knowledge on global subjects that affect everyone. Everyone in the world should have a voice of their own and if a show like Oprah helps women take a small step in gaining one, then I think it’s a step in the right direction.

Single-handedly empowering one of the most suppressed sections of the female population. Is there anything Oprah CAN'T do?

I was a little shocked after reading this article.

Don't get me wrong. I think it's great that Saudi women, women that don't have many rights, are finding ways to express themselves. By Western standars, these women are certainly oppressed.

What worried me, though, is that Oprah is having such an impact on people. After all, who the heck is Oprah??!! She has a TV show. OK. She's a celebrity. Alright. But it's scary how much a influence a TV personality can have.

Scarier, perhaps, is the fact that Oprah as the ability, truly, to swing an entire election in Barack Obama's favor. This in NO way reflects my political stance, as I would be just as terrified if she had the ability to put McCain in office. When she announced her loyalty to Obama a few months ago, McCain's campaign advisers were worried. Truly worried.

It just goes to show you how much people idolize/worship celebrities not only in this country, but throughout the world. Scary, no?
